White Cliff, West Vancouver

2-ply SBS torch-on and a fully custom sheet-metal package on an oceanfront home where the roof is part of the architecture.

Project Overview

A 2-ply SBS torch-on membrane with custom-fabricated metal fascia, cap and counter-flashings on a waterfront home in the White Cliff area of West Vancouver. Completed in November 2020, the project combined flat-roof waterproofing with architectural sheet metal that had to look right from the water and the street.

Roofing System & Materials

  • Torch-applied SBS base sheet and granulated cap sheet across all flat areas, laps torched and probed
  • Reinforced flashings up every parapet and wall; drains re-flashed with new clamping rings
  • Fascia, cap and counter-flashings measured on site and bent in our shop in long lengths, with concealed cleats and fabricated corners
  • Material and fastener grades selected for a marine environment

Challenges & Solutions

Oceanfront roofs in West Vancouver take salt spray, wind-driven rain and sun with no shelter, and on this home the roof edges are visible from every angle. The metal had to be straight, consistent and fastened so it would never streak the cladding below. Long shop-bent runs, concealed cleats and compatible metals give a single clean line from the water, and the granulated cap sheet protects the membrane on a roof that gets no shade.
